Why We Love First Fridays

October 17th, 2016 - It’s great meeting our Binghamton neighbors, and introducing them to interesting artists and community projects.

On the first Friday evening of each month since 2004, the First Friday Art Walk has attracted hundreds of people who celebrate TGIF by visiting artists’ open studios, exhibitions in over 40 galleries, and enjoying Binghamton’s good eats and interesting shops. Held from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, First Friday helps support our local businesses and the city’s growing arts community. HealthlinkNY has hosted First Friday events every month since we relocated our Western New York Office downtown in August 2015, offering the community ample event space to showcase artists and organizations that serve our region.

This month, we hosted “Creative Memories of the Past 10 Years,” celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Magic Paint Brush Project, which holds workshops for individuals with intellectual or physical disabilities and their parents. The works displayed were as remarkable as the artists themselves. Many of the pieces featured dribbled paint à la Jackson Pollack or the vivid colors of Marc Chagall. In some works, recycled strips of canvas were used from earlier pieces to weave into a creative matrix. The framed artwork was so popular that six pieces were sold. The proceeds went to Life Is Washable, Inc., which administers the project.

Next Month: Arf! Arf!

At the next First Friday November 4th, come to HealthlinkNY to meet the Binghamton Police Department’s K9 unit. The K9 unit’s human handlers and dogs will demonstrate their crime-fighting techniques, and will answer your questions.
