Access to Patient Information a Priority at Greater Hudson Valley Health System

August 5th, 2016 - A new connection through the HealthlinkNY HIE will improve care for nearly 450,000 residents served

With more than 3,300 professionals and 850 medical staff members, the Greater Hudson Valley Health System (GHVHS) is one of the largest healthcare providers serving Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster counties. Now clinicians at its two member hospitals[1]—the Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown, NY, and two Catskill Regional Medical Center facilities in Harris, NY, and Callicoon—will be accessing and contributing patient records to the region and throughout New York State, thanks to a new bi-directional connection through the HealthlinkNY HIE.

“We are continually adapting and updating our procedures to ensure optimal clinical workflows with fast and secure access to patient information,” says Brian Tew, Chief Information Officer for the Greater Hudson Valley Health System. “Our priority is to provide seamless access to patient information, which allows clinicians to deliver optimal care.”

The nearly 450,000 patients served by GHVHS will appreciate that clinicians both inside and outside its hospitals will now be able to make more informed diagnoses and treatment plans. With the patient’s consent, providers connected to the HIE can access information about a patient’s in-patient stay or emergency department visit. What’s more, that information can follow the patient throughout New York State, as HealthlinkNY is part of SHIN-NY, the Statewide Health Information Network of New York.

Contributing data to the HIE is another example of GHVHS’ commitment to leveraging technology for patient care. Orange Regional recently was awarded a Stage 7 designation, the highest HIMSS designation available, for the hospital’s electronic medical record (EMR) implementation. Only 4.2 percent of the 5,400 hospitals in the U.S. have achieved such recognition, and Orange Regional is one of just three such hospitals in New York State. Additionally, Health & Hospital Networks included Orange Regional in its just-published list of 2016 Most Wired Hospitals.

Now that its member hospitals are fully connected to the HealthlinkNY HIE, GHVHS will continue to be a regional leader in leveraging the full power of health information technology.
